Science-based food safety: Diamond V at 75 from IAFP’s Annual Meeting

Dr. Evan Chaney

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, USA (July 19, 2018) — An organizational commitment to animal health and well-being is a vital first step in developing an effective pre-harvest food safety program, according to Evan Chaney, Ph.D., Director of Food Safety Microbiology at Diamond V.

“Once the commitment is there,” Chaney says, “then we can see that action manifest through effective management programs, including biosecurity practices, sanitation programs, data collection and analyses, and utilization of current science-based knowledge.”

Watch the video »

Dr. Chaney participated in the annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), held earlier this month in Salt Lake City, Utah. Diamond V’s Kevin Corizzo interviewed him as part of the company’s monthly video series Diamond V at 75: Immune Strength for Life, which celebrates the company’s history in the animal, feed, and food industries and highlights its scientific research, technical expertise, and vision for the future. Diamond V has more than 75 years of experience helping farmers and food companies feed people safely and responsibly.

Dr. Chaney adds that with organizational commitment to animal health and well-being and management programs in place, then direct intervention technologies can approach maximum efficacy.

“Over time,” he says, “this reduces environmental pressure and infection pressure within live animal production, and makes management programs more effective.”

The “Diamond V at 75” video series continues throughout 2018 with on-site interviews with Diamond V experts at major industry events.

Enhancing Dairy Profitability in Today’s Market: Diamond V at 75

Dr. Dave Ohman

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, USA (September 13, 2018) — Today’s milk market is one of the toughest on record and dairy producers must monitor critical factors in production to keep milk production and quality up while keeping costs down, says Dave Ohman, D.V.M., Technical Service Specialist with Diamond V.

Dr. Ohman identified three areas of focus: udder health, forage quality and cow comfort.

“Comfortable cows produce more milk,” Dr. Ohman says. “They don’t have to use their nutrients to have higher maintenance needs associated with stress and heat abatement.”

Diamond V’s Kevin Corizzo interviewed Dr. Ohman as part of the company’s monthly video series Diamond V at 75: Immune Strength for Life, which celebrates Diamond V’s history in the animal and feed industries and highlights its scientific research, technical expertise, and vision for the future. The September video serves as a preview for World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, where Diamond V dairy experts will be on hand to meet producers next month.

Watch the video »

The September video also features insight from Diamond V’s Devin Hanson, Ph.D., Ruminant Field Technical Specialist. Dr. Hanson says producers are using new research to help manage mastitis on the dairy.

“In the last couple years, producers have focused on optimizing cow comfort, elevating their milking procedures within the parlor, and removing bottlenecks that create stress on the farm,” he says. “Any time they can alleviate stress, that’s ultimately going to leave an animal less susceptible for disease on farm.”

The “Diamond V at 75” video series is continuing throughout 2018 with on-site interviews with Diamond V experts at major industry events.
